Duplin County Partnership for Career Planning and the Duplin County Schools Careers and Technical Education Program held a Career Fair for over 600 Duplin County eighth graders on Feb. 10. Forty-three adults represented thirty careers at career booths set-up at Kenan Memorial Auditorium.

The eighth grade students in Duplin County Schools visited the two career booths of their choice and listened to presentations pertaining to various career fields. Students learned about employment options, educational requirements, salaries, and hiring practices. Local business and industry representatives and instructors from James Sprunt Community College, Sampson Community College, Mount Olive College, and UNC-Wilmington, shared personal reflections on their careers.

Careers highlighted at the event included Agribusiness, Art, Banking, Child Care, Computer Technology, Construction, Cosmetology, Counseling, Drafting, Construction, Electronics, Emergency Medical Services, Engineering, Fashion Merchandising, Wildlife/Forestry; Lawyer, Law Enforcement, Manufacturing, Nursing, Pharmacy, Photography, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Pilot, Radio/Communication; Restaurant Management, Swine Management and Poultry Production, Teaching, Trucking, Military careers and Veterinary Medicine.

Local education administrators, such as Duplin County Schools Assistant Superintendents Cary Powers and Bo Mullins, Tarla Smith, director of Career and Technical Education/JROTC, June Davis, JSCC vice-president of Curriculum Services, Vickie Robinson, director of development at Mount Olive College, and Denise Britt, Duplin County Schools Career Development Liaison — just to name a few — were present to guide the event. Emceeing the Career Fair was Willie Gillespie, Duplin County School Board member.

Career development coordinators and counselors noted how enthusiastic the students were about the career booth displays and information provided by booth representatives. Lynette Taylor, Duplin County Schools, CTE administrative assistant, commented on the employers’ commitment to the event as well. “We set-up 30 booths for employers and each booth was filled with employers who honored their commitment to participate in this eighth grade Career Fair. The employer’s attendance is a key to the success of this event”

According to Rebecca Judge, chairman of the Duplin County Partnership for Career Planning, this year some employers were asked for more than their time commitment. Ms. Judge reported, “Earlier in the year, it looked as if the budget would not be able to support a career fair. The 2010 eighth grade Career Fair was made possible when the following local Business/Industries answered the Partnerships’ call for financial support: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Creekside Lawn and Garden, Duplin County Farm Bureau, First Bank in Kenansville, Home Connections, House of Raeford Farms, Inc., Linda G. Smith Farms, Murphy Brown, LLC, Nationwide Insurance-Kim Hatcher, Phillips and Phillips, Attorneys at Law, Southern Bank and Trust Company, Kenansville; Southland Dental Care, The Veranda, Tri-County Electric Membership Corporation, and Westwater Hams.”

Tarla Smith, director of Career and Technical Education/JROTC, expressed her gratitude to everyone who helped the Duplin County Partnership for Career Planning sponsor another successful eighth grade Career Fair.
