The event, which is called Wal-Mart Heart, was started 19 years ago, said driver Leonard King. He expressed that it began in Texas when a young boy who was diagnosed with a terminal disease was given just nine months to live.
“He asked if he could ride in a Wal-Mart truck,” said King. From there, a tradition began for the company where children would be honored and given a chance to escape into the life of a Wal-Mart driver. Then in 2009, the event was brought to the Clinton location where local children could participate.
Last month, the Clinton Wal-Mart had its second annual event where children were given cake, prizes and the most treasured time inside the cab of an eighteen wheeler.
“It is really a special day,” said King, “To see their smiles, that is what makes it all worth while.”
This year, as many as nine children were given name badges, belt buckles and shirt to remember the day of fun.
King saidthat it would have not been possible without the help of the Clinton Wal-Mart and its manager, Jennifer Slack.
“They really did a great job,” said King.
