The couple was united in marriage on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at 6 p.m. in the evening at St. Paul Free-Will Baptist Church in Newton Grove. The Rev. Braxton Howard Carter performed the double-ring ceremony.
Given in marriage by her parents, the bride wore a single strapped ball gown of ivory satin. Pearl and Swarovski crystals with lace embroidery embellished the bodice of the gown. The bride was adorned with a cathedral length veil once worn by her aunt, Mrs. Lark Tart Thornton. The veil featured ivory Battenberg lace embroidery with ivory lace trim. The bride's bouquet consisted of ivory calla lilies and was accented with a blue ribbon attached to a challenge coin given to the bride as a gift from her groom.
The bride was attended by her sister, Natalie Starr Tart of Newton Grove carrying a bouquet of ivory calla lilies. Natalie Starr wore a vintage black velvet evening gown accented with a black satin bow waist belt. The dress featured black Battenberg lace adorned with Swarovski crystals around the neckline. Ivory and pink rose petals were sprinkled down the isle by flower girl, Miss Katie Lee Whitman, cousin of the bride, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Troy Mac Whitman of Newton Grove. Mr. Jeffrey Wayne Phillips, father of the groom and Staff Sergeant Justin Carr Phillips, brother of the groom, of Kentucky, served as best men. Mr. Philip Andrew Pennington and Mr. Daniel John Pennington, cousins of the groom, both of Goldsboro, and Mr. Chancellor Reid Thornton and Mr. Charles Hooper Tart, III, cousins of the bride, both of Newton Grove, served as ushers.
The ceremony was directed by Ms. Mary Starr Tart and Mrs. Lark Tart Thornton, aunts of the bride, both of Newton Grove. Program attendants were Miss Catherine Elisabeth Freemon and Miss Anne Stuart Freemon, cousins of the groom and daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Upton Freemon of Pikeville. Attending the guest register were Mr. and Mrs. Connie Mac Whitman, the bride's uncle and aunt of Newton Grove. The vocalists for the ceremony were cousins of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Bowden Warren of Newton Grove accompanied by Mr. Stan Iredell Benton of Clinton.
Following the ceremony, the parents of the bride hosted a dinner reception in the church fellowship hall. A wedding cake prepared by the father of the bride was served as the dessert. Mr. Michael Bowden Warren served as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Special music was provided by Miss Natalie Starr Tart, sister of the bride and Mr. Marcus Adam Pennington, cousin of the groom, of Goldsboro.
A prenuptial rehearsal dinner was hosted by the groom's parents on Feb. 5 at Pleasant Hill Free-Will Baptist Church in Pikeville.
The bride is currently employed as a Registered Nurse at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield and Carteret General Hospital in Moorehead City. The groom is employed by the United States Army and is stationed at Fort Bragg. The couple will reside in Newton Grove.
