A routine traffic stop turned into a foot chase between a deputy and two passengers of an SUV Saturday morning.

According to reports from the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, a patrol deputy spotted a green Kia traveling near Spring Branch Road, just north of Spivey’s Corner, making a minor traffic violation. Deputies attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver would not stop the car, sheriff’s authorities said.

The Kia then made a turn on Bryant Lane and reportedly circled a house before stopping the vehicle. When the deputy got out of his cruiser to approach the Kia, the two men jumped out and fled.

The deputy was able to capture the driver, however the passenger eluded arrrest.

Willie Lee Bryant, 40, of 305 East Duke St., Dunn, was arrested and charged with resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer and fleeing to elude capture. Bryant was given a $3,000 bond and a court date of March 23.

According to the N.C. Department of Corrections, Bryant has a previous conviction of assault with the intent to inflict serious injury, a misdemeanor offense, dating back to May 1993.
