In an attempt to avoid crashing into a Clinton City school bus carrying children, a N.C. Highway Patrol trooper ran into a home on North Boulevard in Clinton Monday afternoon, injuring his ankle and causing damage to the porch.

Trooper D.K. Pearson was traveling east on North Boulevard in pursuit of a vehicle when a school bus, traveling across North Boulevard from Jasper Street, began to cross the intersection around 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon. Pearson swerved his vehicle to miss the bus, hit a curb and then drove into the right front porch of the home, located at 401 North Blvd.

Patrol officials said the investigation is ongoing and no charges had been filed in the incident as of press time Tuesday.

According to Dr. Robert Taylor, city schools assistant superintendent for administrative services, the bus was carrying students from Butler Avenue School. The bus remained parked after the incident and all parents of the 15-plus children on board were called. “This is the normal procedure,” said Taylor. “The good news is that no one was injured. All the kids were safe. It could have been a lot worse.”

Inside the home were a mother and her teenaged son, said home owner Nathan Barefoot, who did not know the extent of the damage to his home Monday afternoon.

“The car hit the concrete porch, but it also hit that corner of the house,” he said. “The two were inside, but they were not hurt at all. The structural damage inside had some cracking. I have called my contractor, but right now I don’t know how significant the damage inside is. We do know that the porch and some vinyl siding was damaged, but the inside where the cracking is — that could be a problem.”

In addition to the N.C. Highway Patrol, Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, Clinton Police Department, Clinton Fire Department, and Sampson County EMS were on scene Monday.

It was not clear exactly why or who trooper Pearson was in pursuit of when the incident occurred.

When asked for a comment Tuesday Morning, First Sgt. D.L. Hewitt would only say that the investigation is “ongoing”.

wat I wanna kno is this...was the driver that the trooper was "pursuing" dangerous...were they shooting out of the windows, commited a murder, a rape etc..u get the point...if NOT then Y would he put many lives, INCLUDING his own, in any kinda danger...he knew this was a time that buses would b out, so as it was mentioned b4...they have radios AND cell phones that could have been used 2 catch this other person, but he opted 2 try 2 pursue the driver himself anf now look...u have a damaged house, HP car, the trooper himself, sum of the kids r prob still scared bc of this "accident", and i use that term very loosely, and the ppl in the house coulda been hurt...weren't but coulda been...he coulda killed himself, them, innocent children had he not swerved...point being, there would have 2 b a very good reason he continued 2 pursue this other driver at a time of day when there r kids on buses out AND N Blvd IS a busy place...hmmmm...lots of questions the trooper should have 2 answer and he should think really hard b4 doing so...

The last time I checked, rndarkhorse, there hasn't been a car built that can out run a radio. Trooper D.K. (Destructive Knocker) Pearson could have called in the tag number and description of the car. The driver would have been picked up in a few days (most law enforcement agencies still do that).

So, rndarkhorse, why don't you thank the NC tax payers who will shell out the money to cover the cost of a Dodge Charger and the repairs of the Barefoot home due to D.K.'s over egarness.

It's a shame that some people in our community have no respect for our North Carolina Highway Patrol. You people obviously don't realize how dangerous their jobs are and how much time they miss with their families to try to keep our highways safe! When they leave home- they have an increased chance of never kissing their kids good night again- b/c of having to protect and serve the community/state. Instead of a Thank you for this trooper risking his life in order to prevent an entire school bus full of injuries and possibly deaths- time is taken to comment that the trooper should get a ticket/ or a "list of tickets" b/c his actions "could have caused injury to kids on a school bus". I think you guys are missing the fact that the trooper avoided the school bus and instead- risked his life by hitting the house. His actions were brillant and took quick thought/reflexes. The Troopers don't have to be stopped - our community does. Take time to really "STOP" and think about what these men and women do on a daily basis. If you are in trouble- or there is a drunk on the highway who is headed in your direction to possibly be reason for your death or a loved one's death- do you want someone to STOP the trooper and give he/she a citation ( for what injury he/she could cause during their pursuit to catch the bad guy)- OR do you want he/she to do whatever they need to do to help you out even if it means them wrecking enroute ??? THINK ABOUT IT PEOPLE. Thank you to all Law Enforcement for risking your lives for the sake of others on a daily basis......there are people that appreciate and respect you!! The others don't count!

Perhaps, this incident will draw attention to, and get something done about, the overall dangerous disregard that many vehicle operators around here show. In and around Clinton, reckless driving tends to be the norm. Too many people ignore lane markings, speed limits, stop signs, and the like. Just observe traffic around the courthouse, or up and down Sunset Avenue to get an idea about what I'm saying. It's the same whether motorists are young, old, or in-between; whether foreign, domestic, or undeclared; doesn't matter if they're telephoning, texting, or just plain can't drive worth a nickel. And where is law enforcement when all these violations are occurring? What, if anything, should it try to do about this problem?

These Troopers have to be stopped . They have gone ticket crazy since the state has become low in their budget. Sampson County are demanding that they write everyone a ticket no matter what. I sure hope Trooper Pearson gets a list of tickets due to his careless operation . But with the corruption in Sampson County & the HP he will probally not recieve anytype of Ticket even though his actions could have caused many injuries or deaths to the kids on board the bus
