A 19-year-old Sampson County man was jailed on a laundry list of sex charges Tuesday afternoon after parents of the victim reported him to authorities.

Jonathan Melendez, 19, of William R. King Road, Newton Grove, was charged with second degree sex offense; statutory rape; taking indecent liberties with a child/minor; sexual battery; and assault on a female.

Melendez was taken to the Sampson County Detention Center and placed under a $150,000 secured bond by magistrate J. Dixon.

According to reports from Sampson County Sheriff’s officials, Melendez allegedly touched a 13-year-old female, also from Newton Grove, in an “sexually inappropriate manner” in an incident that took place overnight Monday.

Melendez was taken into custody at his residence Tuesday around 11:45 a.m.

In addition to the $150,000 bond, Melendez was scheduled to appear in court this Friday, March 5.

According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections, Melendez has no prior convictions.
