A 30-year-old Roseboro man is facing a host of charges after allegedly robbing a convenience store and then assaulting the clerk Monday morning.

Travis Ray Kemp, 30, of 512 Boone St., Roseboro, was arrested and charged with concealment of goods; larceny; and assault on a female after being taken into custody early Monday morning around 1 a.m.

According to reports from the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, Kemp reportedly went into the Scotchman Store, located at 200 East Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. in Roseboro, just before 1 a.m. Monday to purchase alcohol. The 31-year-old female clerk witnessed Kemp taking a can of Vienna sausages, valued at $1.59, went to the restroom and returned without the can — it was found empty in the restroom. Kemp came back and attempted to purchase an alcoholic beverage, which the clerk refused to sell him. As she was taking the beer back to the cooler, she witnessed Kemp stuff another bottle of beer in his pants, a $2.99 Corona malt beverage, and went back to the register to call law enforcement.

As she was walking back to the register, Kemp allegedly grabbed the 31-year-old from behind and began “shaking” her. The clerk managed to free herself from him and ran to call police. Kemp left the scene. The clerk was not injured in the incident.

However, while investigators were on scene and filing the clerk’s report, Kemp allegedly walked back into the store and attempted to use the restroom. The clerk identified him and he was immediately taken into custody. Investigators also found two cans of Star-Kist tuna on his person that was also taken from the store, valued at $3.05.

Kemp was taken to the Sampson County Detention Center and placed under a $3,000 secured bond. He was also given a trial date of April 19.

According to the N.C. Department of Corrections, Kemp has a long history of convictions dating back to 1996. Those convictions include, disorderly conduct; assault on a policeman; resisting officer; felony breaking and entering; will/want injury of real property (all in 1996); DWI; larceny of a motor vehicle, felony breaking and entering and larceny (all in 1997); common law robbery and possession of stolen goods (1998); DWI level 2 and assault on a public official (1999); possession of a firearm by a felon and larceny (2001); possession with intent to sell a Schedule VI controlled substance (2003); assault with intent to inflict serious injury (2002); resisting officer, disorderly conduct and drunk and disorderly (2008); and communicating threats (2008).

I would say I can't believe this dummy went back into the store he stole from while the cops were there, but there again this is Sampson County.

Dewey, are you going to plead bargain this guy to help out your campaign? Seems like Mr. Kemp is an expert on taking deals.
