A late afternoon wreck Monday sent one area man to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after his vehicle flipped more than five times in an accident in northern Sampson County.

According to reports filed by trooper C.H. Strickland from the N.C. Highway Patrol, Nicholas Ryan Burgess, 19, of Dunn, was driving his 1994 Honda passenger car on Spring Branch Road, just south of the Harnett County line, Monday around 5:04 p.m. when he attempted to pass a 2006 Cadillac driven by 52-year-old Joan Langdon Norris, also of Dunn, at a curve.

Burgess attempted to pass at a high rate of speed and then lost control of his vehicle, running off the left side of the road, hitting a ditch and then rolling over approximately five times, reports state. His vehicle came to rest in the roadway.

Norris veered to the right, away from Burgess to avoid a collision and struck a curb at Spring Branch Road.

Burgess was rushed to Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital in Dunn, and was later transported to UNC Hospitals at Chapel Hill. A condition report was not available Tuesday. Norris suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident.

Burgess was charged with reckless driving.

I hope you know that you have upset a VERY large family by spouting off about something you know nothing about.

For your information, Mr. Burgess was attempting to keep from hitting a car that was almost stopped in the middle of a blind curve on a 55mph road. If she had not been there, none of this would have happened, but he was thinking of her well being only when he lost control avoiding her.

For your information, Mr. Burgess is in very serious condition, with a broken neck, shattered cheekbone, skull fracture, among other things. He has a long, slow, painful recovery ahead of him, and why? Because he was trying to avoid hurting someone else.

If that is your definition of an "Idiot" as you described him, you should just keep your mouth shut.

I do hope this young person recovers completely and learns a lesson from this. This accident could have been worst. So many people today are in such a hurray to get "nowhere" that they totally disregard the rules of the road. On any given day, vehicles pass in no passing zones, curves, dangerously pull out in front of others, and better yet use stop signs as yields. Remeber, you will get there just a fast if you drive safely. In fact, your chances of getting there at all is better by being a safe driver.
