A Roseboro woman reported being the victim of a check scam in the amount of $4,855 to the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office.

The scam is a simple one that has been popping up all around Sampson County, as well as the state.

A letter is sent to the victim stating they are winners in the “Super Seven Contest” and their name was drawn on Oct. 3, 2009 as such. It also states that the victim has won a lump sum of $250,000 that would be sent in check form once the taxes on the winnings have been paid.

Enclosed in the letter is a check in the amount of $4,885, which is said to be deducted from the victim’s winnings. The official looking letter, with the heading of Universal Trust and Finance, Inc. and signed by Morris Lexington, states that the taxes on the $250,000 would cost $2,985 that is expected to be paid through Moneygram “found at every Wal-Mart” or any Western Union located “in any convenience store.”

Amazingly, the letter even states, in all caps, to keep the winning “confidential” until the claim has been processed.

A phone number is listed at the bottom. However, others who have fallen victim to the same scam warn not to call. “They will call you and never stop calling,” said one poster on Complaints Board. “They will keep calling you until they get something out of you ... the check looks so real, but beware, it is all a fraud. We need to bring these people down!”

Although the Sheriff’s Office has received similar complaints in the past, they continue to warn residents to be on the lookout for scams asking for money.

“If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is,” said Capt. Eric Pope. “If folks think they are going to get free money without anything in return, it is not going to happen. Unfortunately, people like this prey of greed.”

What idiot would fall for this scam? Why would you think you had to pay taxes up front on money you haven't received yet and pay it through Moneygram or Western Union? Oh, dear God.

This little gem is the highlight of the article,"A phone number is listed at the bottom. However, others who have fallen victim to the same scam warn not to call. “They will call you and never stop calling,” said one poster on Complaints Board. “They will keep calling you until they get something out of you".

People, it's caller ID or better yet call the phone company. Just because the phone rings and you know it's these losers calling doesn't mean you have to put up with it. Here some simple advice,"Hang UP!" You're not going to miss any important church gossip if you don't pick up the phone. Sounds like a bunch of sheep.
