The annual Sampson Community College Foundation Phone-A-Thon made the grade as students, staff, administrators and friends of the college collaborated to generate over $15,000 in pledges. SCC Board of Trustees members and Foundation Directors were also on hand to make calls for the Phone-a-Thon and thank donors for their continued support of the college's mission. In addition, for the first time in Phone-A-Thon history, Susan Bristow hosted and interviewed those who have made an indelible imprint in the life of the college.
Star Telephone graciously hosted the event and donated the use of their facility.
“We are indebted to Star for their support through the years and more importantly their dedication that goes beyond the call of duty,” adds Lisa Turlington, executive director of the SCC Foundation. More than 300 people made pledges that will go toward scholarships and student and faculty support. Last year alone, 74 scholarships were awarded to students in need. “We owe a big thank you to Star, because this wouldn't be possible without their support,” says Turlington.
Gift certificates were awarded hourly to the volunteer with the highest pledge total. “We appreciate Beth's, Zengs, Andy's, Ribeyes Steakhouse, Ruby Tuesdays and Southern Style BBQ for donating gift certificates,” adds Turlington. “Community support is crucial to our success.” The largest prize of the night went to standout volunteer Joyce Lynch, a nursing student, who raised more than $1000 in pledges. She won a weekend in an Ocean Front Condo at Carolina Beach donated by SCC Foundation President, Steve Stefanovich.
With her first Foundation fundraiser under her belt, Turlington says she is eager for next year's event. “I am overwhelmed with all our wonderful volunteers and generous donors who are committed to the success of the community college. I know I can count on them to continue to answer the call.”
