The Sampson County Board of Education has pinpointed over $1.7 million in capital outlay needs within its schools; it will be up to the Sampson County Board of Commissioners whether the projects will actually get funded.

The school board approved the proposed 2010-2011 capital needs requests earlier this week, a packet that will now be fowarded to the county for its perusal during the budgeting process.

“I hope the commissioners will examine the request closely and see our capital budget is not a wishlist but rather an essential list of needed upgrades and fixes,” said superintendent Dr. Etahn Lenker.

At the board’s Monday meeting, held at Union Middle School, members unanimously approved the request that totals $1,700,200 and asks for district-wide needs totaling $207,400. Those district-wide requests include upgrades to security and fire systems; furniture/blind replacements; asbestos removal; and heating ventilation and air conditioning replacements.

“I understand the capital budget is large but carpets, blinds, parking lots, HVAC, bathrooms, security items are all examples of needed improvements or repairs,” added Lenker.

Some of the schools in the system required more funding than others.

Lakewood High, with a total of $181,000 requested, is listed as having replacement lockers ($64,000); replacement of bathroom partitions ($28,000); a renovation of the pressbox ($24,000); and the construction of a new concessions building ($65,000).

Hobbton High, with a total of $154,000 requested, is listed as having the needs of a new softball/soccer restroom facility ($58,000); a new clock system ($12,000); auditorium renovations ($54,000); HVAC replacements ($22,000) and the addition of acoustic ceilings ($8,900).

Hobbton Elementary, with $100,500 requested, is listed as needing an additional parking area ($48,000); classroom furniture replacements ($21,000); additional intercoms ($6,500); and HVAC replacements ($25,000).

Roseboro-Salemburg Middle is the last school with needs totaling over $100,000.

RSMS is listed with $160,700 requested for a new restroom/concessions building ($58,000); new athletic lockers ($14,000); gym window replacements/roof insulation ($42,000); gym concession renovations ($22,000); and new athletic bleachers ($24,700).

The bus garage request includes cameras/GPS systems for school buses (half of the fleet), at a cost of $170,000. Although some cameras were installed last year, when the board asked for roughly the same amount of money, commissioners gave them about half of what was requested, which is why some of the items that were listed on last year’s request have carried over to this year.
