Lyle Davis, 40, of 10981 Old Mintz Highway, Garland, was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon; breaking and entering of a motor vehicle; larceny of a firearm; possession of stolen property and simple assault after turning himself into authorities late last week.
Davis was placed under a $25,000 secured bond and given a trial date of April 16.
According to reports from the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, on March 20, Davis, along with another Burch Farms employee, Chris Cottle of Mt. Olive, , got into an altercation around 4:30 p.m. at the business, located at 85 Burch Road, Faison. Davis reportedly punched the 32-year-old Cottle twice in the back of the head. Cottle then went to his vehicle to get a gun; Davis went to his vehicle to get a baseball bat.
After other employees stepped in to break up the argument, Cottle went to put his gun away, but Davis, reports indicate, went into Cottle’s vehicle and stole the gun. Davis allegedly then fired the .45-caliber gun at Cottle about a foot away from his feet, hit him twice in the head with the gun and then fired off about four rounds from the weapon before taking off.
Cottle was taken to Sampson Regional Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries and released later that night.
Davis turned himself in to the Sampson County Detention Center Thursday around 5 p.m.
