A Roseboro man is in the Sampson County Detention Center awaiting trial after being arrested in connection with an assault and strangulation of his child’s mother.

Derek D. Goodwin, 29, of 1919 Claude’s Drag Road, Roseboro, was arrested Friday around 7 p.m. and charged with domestic strangulation and assault on a female.

According to reports, Sampson County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Goodwin after warrants were taken out against him by his 24-year-old ex-girlfriend, with whom he shares joint custody of a 14-month old child.

The woman took out the warrants Friday on two separate incidents — one that allegedly occurred on April 1; the other on April 15.

Reports indicate that on April 1, the woman went to Goodwin’s residence to pick up their child. An argument broke out and ended with Goodwin allegedly placing both his hands around her neck, pressing against her Adam’s Apple, and choking her until she passed out. When she came to, she took the child and left the home.

On April 15, the woman was visiting a friend at the Roseboro Village Apartments, and while talking to her friend, she reportedly noticed Goodwin’s current girlfriend outside, in front of an apartment located behind her vehicle.

The woman went to confront the girlfriend about harassing phone calls and the two got into what officers termed an altercation. At some point during the fight, Goodwin reportedly stepped from the residence, located at 411 East Jackson St., and allegedly punched his ex in the left eye and the forehead.

Reports indicate that Goodwin then grabbed the woman and dragged her across the road, took their child from the back seat of the vehicle and pushed her back into the vehicle.

It was not clear why the woman did not report the incident to investigators at the time of the incidents.

Goodwin will have his first trial date on April 27 for the assault charge, a misdemeanor; and on April 30 for the strangulation charge, a felony.

According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections, Goodwin has a history of convictions dating back to 1999. Those convictions include: larceny (February 1999); assault on a female and damage to property (April 2002); possession of stolen goods (August 2005); possession of a firearm by felon (September 2007); and possession of a schedule II controlled substance (July 2008).
