The town of Roseboro is hoping to put the brakes on a speed limit issue on N.C. 24. Amanda Beatty, the deputy clerk with town, expressed that the speed limit, located near Dubose Steel, has been 35 mph. However, the Department of Transportation has the speed limit recorded at 45 mph, despite it being changed for many years.

“Thirty five is already the limit, but the paperwork has seemed to escape the right hands,” said Beatty.

When a ticket was issued to speeders going over 35 miles per hour, the ticket may have been more difficult to enforce.

To rectify the problem, the town board had to approve a resolution expressing the board’s desire to have the speed limit change to 35 mph.

According to a document that will be submitted to the DOT, the town requests the speed limit of 45 mph be repealed “on N.C. 24 from the eastern corporate district to the western corporate district.”

Beatty stated that she does not anticipate any more problems with the paperwork and for all forms to be delivered to the Department of Transportation soon.

At last Tuesday’s meeting, commissioner David Alexander motioned to approve the resolution. The town attorney Bill Poole also prepared an amendment to the town’s original ordinance that was by James McLean and approved unanimously.

Mayor Roland Hall established that this has been an issue for the town at least 12 years, when the town changed the speed to 35.

“Because of all of the action going on 24 around Crumpler Pipe and Dubose Steel, they made a resolution to change the speed from 45 to 35,” Hall commented.

Then, a few years ago, former mayor William McLemore explained that the town had received another letter saying the form used was outdated and needed to be replaced with a new resolution, which was changed. Then again this year, the DOT once again issued a letter to the town in regards to the speed limit and the resolution needing to be tweaked.

Hall said that he “doesn’t think” that there has been a problem enforcing the speed, noting, “the speed is posted there.” However, to correct the paperwork, the resolution needed to be made.

From here, the mayor also expressed that he does not think there will be anymore problems with the current resolution, but he stated, since this is third time it has been submitted, “one can never tell.”
