Investigators with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office are investigating an assault with a deadly weapon on an 83-year-old Autryville man early Tuesday morning.

According to reports, the man was beat with a flashlight in his home on Yellow Skin Road in Autryville. However, the incident wasn’t reported until an hour and a half after the alleged beating.

Investigators close to the incident said that it wasn’t clear if the suspect broke into the residence, because the men were acquaintances and knew each other. What was reported was that the 83-year-old victim was sleeping in bed when the man hit him in the head with a flashlight and then robbed him of close to $300 in cash a short time after midnight Tuesday.

A suspect has been identified in the alleged beating and investigators were still working the case Tuesday afternoon.

The man suffered only minor injuries.
