CONCORD — An accident involving a motorcycle on N.C. 24, near Bennett Lane, sent one to the emergency room and slowed rush hour traffic to a standstill Thursday evening.

According to reports from the N.C. Highway Patrol, Daniel Robert Talamantes III, 32, of 2022 Forrest Drive, Fayetteville, was charged with failure to reduce speed after running into the backside of a 2004 Ford pickup truck driven by Tyrone Owens, 46, of 610 Pine St., Roseboro.

Talamantes, reports indicate, was traveling two cars behind Owens Thursday as they both drove east on N.C. 24. Around 5:30 p.m., Talamantes attempted to pass the three vehicles in front of him. At the same time Owens slowed down to make a left turn on Bennett Lane.

The motorcycle rider, whose estimated speed at the point of impact was 65 mph, hit Owens in the driver’s side back quarter panel, was ejected from the bike and landed in a ditch, approximately 64 feet from the point of impact. Owens, who was traveling around 15 mph, was pushed 15 feet from the point of impact.

Although a helicopter was on stand-by to assist Talamantes, it was called off once responders arrived on the scene moments after the wreck. He was rushed to Sampson Regional Medical Center suffering from what was termed serious but not life-threatening injuries.
