The lady Raiders accomplished a goal most will not see in a year, said Midway’s coach Sam Kitchen after stomping Sampson 16-6 in the conference championship game.

“I am so proud of these girls. They finished undefeated and of them played on the county volleyball and basketball championship teams this year,” Kitchen commented. “If you take all teams this year, those girls have not lost but only one game (in basketball).”

Midway’s Sabra Knowles was crowned the winning pitcher Thursday, but the Dark Horses were not ready to hand over the title, said Kitchen.

“Sampson hit her better then anyone has hit her all year,” Kitchen admitted.

While Sampson was able to take a whack at the ball, the Raiders roped an early 10-1 lead, Kitchen recapped.

“They (Sampson) had a lot of chances to quit, but they didn’t,” Kitchen commended the Dark Horses fight.

Despite bucking back 10-6 to trail by four, the Dark Horses were unable to capture the lead from the Raiders. Midway finished Sampson off 16-6.

“They (Sampson) are a good team, and I have a lot of respect for them,” Kitchen said.

At the plate, everyone in the Raider lineup recorded a hit. Knowles had two doubles and Brook Stewart had a two-run double.

Although the Raider team will lose 9 eighth graders at the end of this season, with 7 seventh graders ready to take the field next season, the Raiders are expected to come out ready to defend their title.

No leaders were provided by the Sampson Middle coaching staff.
