Although their pitching was strong, just as Clinton head coach Tracy Thornton said it needed to be, the Dark Horses still fell in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs Friday night. While Taylor Stanley pitched six innings, striking out nine, Clinton still came up short 3-1.

Whiteville, a team the Dark Horses battle every year, entered into Friday’s game sporting a 13-8 record; Clinton, 12-9.

According to Dark Horses statistician Jeff Tew, the Dark Horses’ only run came early in the game.

At the plate, Kullen Bell was 2-3 with an RBI; Wes Purcell was 1-1 with a single; and Will Pearson was 2-3 with two singles.

Stanley faced 27 batters, Tew recalled, adding that he only walked three.

Multiple calls to Thornton were not returned Friday night.
