Although the Midway Raiders have bid adieu to several coaches this year, big things are in store for the high school’s basketball team.

As predicted by athletic director Jeff Wilson on Wednesday, May 19, epic news was going to hit Midway in the near future. That future arrived Tuesday when White Oak High School’s current basketball coach was unanimously approved by the Sampson County Board of Education as Midway’s newest employee.

The Clinton High School and Campbell University graduate is the son of long-time Clinton educator Jim Squibb and Union Middle volleyball and basketball coach Deborah Thomas, who has spent 14 years at the helm of Spartans’ sports. He is also the stepson of Clinton City Board of Education member Kathleen Squibb.

While (Dustin) Squibb is currently the varsity men’s golf coach and the men’s JV and varsity basketball assistant coach at White Oak, as well as a varsity football coach, he will take over the basketball teams at Midway come winter. His post as a physical education teacher starts this fall.

Squibb has also taught at Harnett Central High School, in 2007, and at Triton High School, in 2006.

Midway’s athletic director Jeff Wilson spoke about Squibb Tuesday night, expressing that the new coach had stated his excitement in the opportunity to come teach and coach at Midway.

“I feel Dustin will fit in just fine in our Raider family,” Wilson attested.

Squibb agreed Wednesday during a press conference held in his honor.

“I am coming from a good place (White Oak), but I feel that I can talk to anyone about anything here at Midway. It is a family,” he shared.

Squibb was formally introduced to Raider fans, students, athletes, coaches and parents during the press event held at the new high school last night, during which he credited his and the administration’s passion for Midway as the fuel to apply for the empty post.

“I think where there is great leadership, great things can happen ...” Squibb told. “I believe in the passion Stuart Daughtery, Jeff Wilson and Midway has to offer.”

Along with the Raiders’ passion for excellence, Squibb, himself, is a man who values pride, especially when it comes to academics.

He said the student athletes must realize that the classroom matters.

On the court this winter, Squibb expects the players to share in the responsibilities of the team, one important area being believing in each other.

Before closing the press conference, Squibb, who led the Vikings to a 12-9 record this past season, expressed thanks to his parents, who, he said, had given him everything. He also thanked his wife, Amanda, who he called his anchor; and Kathleen Squibb for putting up with him, he joked.

Assistant Editor Doug Clark contributed to the construction of this article.

The good ole boys were able to "make it work." Tommy Sloan accepts the head football position at MHS. While Coach Sloan is a great coach and person, you have to question the agenda of Calcutt and GH Wilson. Look for them on the sidelines, too. How ironic Calcutt's son is an upcoming freshman.

Good Luck Coach Squibb. Maybe the good old boys will give you a chance and won't prematurely run you away. Hope you know how to play the game of politics.
