The Sampson County 4-H program has a massive plan for the upcoming summer. According to county 4-H director Amanda Bradshaw and her staff Charmae Kendall and Ardith Taylor, there are opportunities for a variety of activities and age groups.

To start the summer programs, the department is planning a huge 4-H Summer Workshop “Kick-Off” beginning at 5:30 p.m. and lasting until 8 p.m., on Tuesday, June 1. The Kick-Off will be held at the Sampson County Livestock Facility in Clinton located at 93 Agriculture Place (Hwy. 421 South next to the 4-H Office). All county youth ages 5-19 are invited to register at that time.

Bradshaw shared that the event will be first come, first served, and she encourages everyone to come and play games and eat hot dogs. FMI regarding the workshops, call the Sampson County 4-H office at 910-592-7162.

The county 4-H program is a part of the North Carolina Extension Service and a part of the North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University program. Those organizations commit themselves to positive action to secure equal opportunity regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability. In addition, two universities welcome all persons without regard to sexual orientation.

Polices and registration procedures have been established by the members of the Sampson County Cooperative Extension Service, and 4-H leaders and volunteers conduct the workshops, which are developed to provide a quality learning experience that is educational, enriching and entertaining. Participants will be asked to select the workshops that they feel will best match their interests or their child’s interests. Participants will receive a letter giving further workshop instructions at the time of registration.

Registration will stay open for any youth ages 5-19 until all workshops reach membership limits. Applicants will be allowed to register for three first choice workshops and five alternate workshops. Bradshaw wanted to remind all participants that registration will be accepted on a “first come, first serve” basis and will only be accepted upon receipt of fees. Telephone registration will not be accepted.

When the participant in the summer workshops registers, a 4-H Medical Information and Informed Consent for Treatment and a media release form must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian for each person registering. The 4-H staff stated that it is a 4-H State office requirement that a new Medical Form be notarized and on file in the 4-H Office each year. A notary will be available at the Extension Office.

The county 4-H staff developed policies that must be observed in order to participate in the summer fun. All fees are non-refundable unless the 4-H Office has to cancel a workshop. In that case, refunds will be made accordingly. The staff, as listed in the policies, expect all participants to be punctual. Taylor shared that when field trips are being taken, the van will wait a maximum of 10 minutes past the scheduled departure time. The staff also wanted to share that children being transported by the 4-H Office, it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to provide an approved booster seat for children under 80 pounds and 8 years old or younger. Adults are welcome to participate in summer workshops and must pre-register, pay the full workshop fee, and provide their own transportation.

“We also cannot express the importance of the punctuality of parents picking up youth following activities and programs. We have made this mandatory,” said Bradshaw. She added if a 4-H staff members are required to wait an excessive amount of time for a child to be picked up, a fee may be charged.

All workshops operate under the 4-H Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Procedure. A copy of this procedure may be secured from the Sampson County 4-H Office.

Other activities are planned for the summer and those interested are encouraged to contact the 4-H office for more details.

One opportunity that will be occurring is the Sacks From Sampson Summer Campaign. This activity is where the Sampson County 4-H is partnering with “Backpack Buddies” and the Bookworms 4-H Club to help feed and supply needy youth of Sampson County. Anyone wanting to participate is asked to bring a sack full of items and receive a prize at the “Sizzling Summer Fun” 2010 Sampson County 4-H Summer Workshops Kick-Off. However, donations will be accepted throughout the summer. A partial list of food and supply items needed include: individual serving-size food items, pretzels, oatmeal, toothpaste, deodorant, granola bars, raisins, sunscreen, body wash, cereal, juice boxes, bath towels, lotion, pop tarts, fruit cups, socks, cooking oil, Vienna sausages, pudding cups, paper plates, aluminum foil, applesauce cups, detergent, bagged sugar, toilet paper and napkins.
