A Clinton man has been arrested and charged with three misdemeanors following a report of an assault at the Royal Lane Apartments.

Amir Hakeem-James Muwwakkil Sr., 22, of 420 Royal Lane, Apt. C, Clinton, was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and larceny.

According to reports released Tuesday morning from the Clinton Police Department, officers were called to the apartment late last Saturday night after Muwwakkil’s 23-year-old girlfriend reported that he had allegedly hit her in the face and then took her house keys and cell phone before running out the back door of the apartment.

The girlfriend also reported that the assault took place in front of a minor.

The victim also told police that Muwwakkil assaulted her just days before, on June 9. On that day, she alleges that the suspect cut her in the chest. Officers, who found probable cause, escorted the woman to the magistrate’s office to obtain a warrant for his arrest.

Muwwakkil was taken to the Sampson County Detention Center and given a trial date of July 27. He placed under no bond in accordance with general statutes relating to domestic violence cases which stipulate that suspects must be held 48 hours in jail.

According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections, Muwwakkil has no prior convictions.
