Officials encourage locals to get out and read this summer

The Sampson-Clinton Public Libraries are gearing up for a fun-filled summer with the children for the annual Summer Reading Program. The program “Make a Splash — Read!” is centered around water-related activities. The programs are free and open to children who are to be in kindergarten through third grade in September 2010. The goal is to motivate children to read all summer to keep up their skills and encourage a love a learning.

There will be five SRP story hours at all branches from June 21 through July 30, skipping the week of the Fourth of July. The weekly schedule is:

• Monday at 4 p.m.: Roseboro Public Library in Roseboro

• Tuesday at 4 p.m.: Bryan Memorial Library in Newton Grove

• Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.: Miriam Lamb Memorial Library in Garland

• Thursday at 4 p.m. : J.C. Holliday Library in Clinton

Please stop by your local library to register your child from June 14 through June 30 to get a packet with more detailed information like the chance to win a $50 gift certificate for reading 15 books.

The Summer Reading Program Kickoff Program will be held on Saturday, June 19, at 10 a.m. at the Clinton's Farmer's Market. Our presenter this year will be Pat Lambe, a storyteller and puppeteer from Haw River, N.C. Lambe's program is entitled, “The Mystery of Coral Reef.”

We also excited have a special guest program entitled “Booktime with Ronald McDonald” where Ronald McDonald will visit each library on the following dates:

• Friday, July 2 at 2 p.m.: J.C. Holliday Library

• Friday, July 9 at 2 p.m.: Miriam Lamb Library

• Thursday, July 15 at 2 p.m.: Roseboro Public Library

• Friday, July 16 at 2 p.m.: Bryan Memorial Library
