With the costs of furthering one’s education after high school ever increasing, the Sampson Community College Foundation is trying to do its part to help, officials said.

The SCC Foundation has awarded a total of $46,356 in scholarships for the 2010-11 year, and those within the foundation have selected high school seniors from across the county to benefit from these awards.

“Our office, and the scholarship committee, has worked with the Financial Aid Office to help recipients connect personally with the donors,” said SCC Foundation executive director Lisa Turlington.

The Foundation, she noted, uses a variety of methods to raise funds for the scholarships that are awarded. One way is through the organization’s annual scholarship drive, a time when local businesses and individuals are contacted and asked for donations to the fund. In addition, an annual telethon, helped greatly by efforts from Star Telephone, is held where area businesses and other individuals within and outside the area with an interest in the community college are contacted.

In the fall of each year, the Foundation holds its annual Sampson Classic in honor of Bill Johnson, one more fund-raising leg of the organization’s efforts to raise funding for scholarships.

Turlington also noted that many people establish endowments and others make contributions to existing scholarship each year, all in an effort to help students secure the education they need.

The executive director said she encourages anyone wishing to establish an endowment or to contribute to any of the scholarship funds already established to please call her office at Sampson Community College, 910-592-808.

The Scholarship Committee is made up of two representatives from student services, college president Dr. Bill Aiken, the vice president of Academic Affairs, and two representatives from the financial aid office. “The financial aid people really know the students and can speak to the committee regarding their needs,” said Turlington.

In order to qualify for scholarship or be considered to be awarded a scholarship, students must apply for financial aid. Full time students must qualify by keeping their grade point average up and remain as full time students. Scholarship recipients receive half of the award for fall semester and the remaining half in the second semester.

Turlington also noted that the Foundation also awarded merit scholarships to one student at each high school in the county as long as a student from the school applies. All but one high school in the county this year received a scholarship. The school not awarded funds did not have an individual to apply. She also stated that members of the Student Government Association were awarded merit scholarships for their services and also have to maintain their GPA and be full time students.

The Foundation began a new merit scholarship program this year entitled the Ambassador Program. The students serve as ambassadors for the college and like all other award recipients must maintain their full time status and grade point average.

“The Foundation is very grateful to all the benefactors and contributors who have given so generously over the past years to make it possible for us to help so many deserving young people further their education,” concluded Turlington.

The majority of scholarships were awarded at the various schools in the county during their award nights and/or graduations.
