BEULAVILLE — After threatening a high school student at East Duplin High, 17-year-old Angel Mancanaries, of Albertson was place under a $50,000 bond Friday. Mancanaries was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, communicating threats, first degree trespassing, possession of a weapon on school property, assault with a deadly weapon, disorderly conduct and resisting a public officer.

The incident occurred early Friday, said one educator who wishes to remain anonymous. The school was put on lock-down through an intercom message, announced the source. “The children were very serious, and the teachers were very serious, and I will have to say, it was an uncomfortable situation.”

The fear of not knowing what was occurring at the time, raised concern among those in the classrooms said the educator. All that was known at the time, was that an intruder made their way onto the campus. That intruder was Mancanaries, said a sheriff’s official.

The former student threatened a current student in the high school gym with a knife. Pam Edwards, media specialist for Duplin County schools said Mancanaries ran to woods when two school personnel attempted to stop him. Sheriff’s officials ran after Mancanaries who took off into a nearby wooded area. During that time, the school went into lock-down.

Inside, students followed the lock-down plan said the educator, “They immediately got to the place where they need to be and were very quiet. I did hear a few of them say that they all wanted to know what was going on, but they knew they couldn’t talk. Their eyes were wide open. They just wanted to go home.”

“We got in lock-down and got into secure areas of the room away from windows. They know we have to be quiet.” Hoping that nobody in the vicinity would hear noises. The lights in classrooms were also turned off to give the illusion that the rooms were empty. The event lasted for two hours or better said the source, adding that the presence of law enforcement was clearly evident.

“I can tell you that. They were very serious; they were looking out for our kids. They were on the job.”

Previous reports filed have stated Mancanaries was hiding around the football stadium when apprehended. Following the arrest, school was released shortly after. Classes will resume in January 2009.
