Local investigators said William Moody Naylor, 74, of Gray Street, failed to see an oncoming pickup truck when he pulled into traffic on N.C. 24 West at 5:16 p.m. Dec. 16.
The collision sent he and the driver of the pickup to Sampson Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Dorothy Naylor, 76, a passenger in the 1991 Buick passenger car being driven by William Naylor, was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. She passed away 1:35 p.m. the next day from injuries sustained in the wreck, N.C. Highway Patrol said.
According to investigating trooper David Kidd, the fatal collision occurred approximately 6 miles west of Roseboro at the intersection of Carry Bridge Road.
Reports state the Naylor’s Buick was stopped at the intersection when it pulled forward from the stop sign and attempted to make a left-hand turn across the eastbound lane of N.C. 24. Investigators said Naylor did not see the 2006 Ford pickup, owned by Tyson Foods out of Fayetteville, traveling east and the two vehicles collided.
Kidd estimated the pickup to be traveling about 55 mph. The car was traveling 5 mph. After impact, the Buick came to rest in the eastbound lane after being pushed straight back about 50 feet. The pickup went left of the centerline and ran off the left side of the roadway and into a ditch, reports state.
Following the wreck, Naylor was charged with a yield violation. After looking into the case, prosecutors will not pursue it any further.
“After consultation with the D.A.’s Office, we’ve decided the only charge will be a yield violation,” Highway Patrol Sgt. G.A. Belflowers said.
