A 43-year-old Sampson County man has been arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon after he pulled out a machete and threatened to kill a 20-year-old female who was attempting to visit her grandfather.

Audrey Lane Register, 43, of 7349 Plain View Highway, Dunn, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and placed under a $2,500 secured bond after his arrest Monday evening.

According to reports, a 20-year-old female was visiting her grandfather at a residence located on Old Store Road, near Spivey’s Corner, when an intoxicated Register, who was reportedly a stranger to both the man and female, allegedly pulled out a rusted machete began swinging it and threatened to kill the female.

The female quickly called her father, who arrived at the residence around 8:55 p.m. and single-handedly took the weapon from Register, as law enforcement arrived on scene. Other than being shaken up, the female and all other parties in the incident escaped uninjured, authorities said.

Register was taken into custody and given a trial date of Aug. 2.

According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections, Register has no previous convictions.
