KENANSVILLE — Following the release of the preliminary Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) scores for Duplin County Schools feelings a mixed. Scores reported from the End of Grade (EOG) and End of Course (EOC) where up across the board but the AYP results saw a decrease in the number of schools meeting the specific, established goals set for each school. Half of the county’s schools met AYP standards set for the school.
In the previous year, Duplin County had 11 schools meeting AYP. The eight schools achieving AYP this year were: Chinquapin Elementary, Duplin Early College High School, E. E. Smith Middle School, Kenansville Elementary School, North Duplin Elementary School, North Duplin Junior/Senior High School, Wallace Elementary School, and Warsaw Middle School. Duplin school superintendent Dr. Austin Obasohan stated, “The teachers have done a great job improving student achievement and should be commended for their efforts. However as professionals we cannot be satisfied, and we must make improvements and achieve with high expectations from our students.”
Each school has a set target goals for that specific school. The target goals are derived from student groups. According to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, AYP measures the yearly progress toward achieving grade level performance for each student group in reading and mathematics. Student groups are: 1) the School as a Whole; 2) White; 3) Black; 4) Hispanic; 5) Native American; 6) Asian; 7) Multiracial; 8) Economically Disadvantaged Students; 9) Limited English Proficient Students; and 10) Students With Disabilities. Most schools do not have all groups represented in their school. In North Carolina, economically disadvantaged students are defined as those eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Forty students or more across all tested grades in a school comprise a group. Scores are included in the schoolwide average for each student who meets the full academic year requirement of 140 days attendance as of the first day of Spring testing, even if the student is not counted in any other group. Some students are in only one group (School as a Whole) if they are part of a group represented by less than 40 students across the tested grades in a school or some students can be in as many as five groups. Some of the state's most at-risk students are represented in several student groups. For example, North Duplin Jr./Senior High has a total of 29 target goals and met all 29 to make AYP for the highest number of goals for the county while the Duplin Early College High School only had two target goals which they met to make AYP.
Historically since the 2004-2005 school year Duplin AYP results have ranged from seven schools achieving AYP to five in 2005-2006 then back to seven in 2006-2007 just to drop back to two in the 2007-2008. Last year’s 11 schools making AYP was the highest reached in the county.
As a result of this year’s scores, which are preliminary until DPI makes them official, North Duplin Elementary will no longer be required to offer School Choice as they have exited Title I School Improvement Status due to having met AYP for two consecutive years. Beulaville Elementary, Rose Hill-Magnolia Elementary, Warsaw Elementary and Warsaw Middle, will continue to offer School Choice or Supplemental Educational Services as they have not yet met the requirements for exiting Title I School Improvement.
Duplin’s EOC and EOG scores presented a much brighter picture with improvements shown across the board. The scores indicate that students reached a higher level of proficiency in state standardized testing. The positive EOC and EOG results help to counterbalance the AYP results but as Obasohan stated, “We have to move forward and continue to provide the best possible educational opportunities for our students to achieve.”
