This year’s Sampson County Pigskin Jamboree will be truly a county event.

The six high schools in Sampson County will be the only football teams participating in the annual football matchup this year, and they’ll all play at one location — Clinton High School.

The official kickoff to Sampson County’s football season, the jamboree will be held Friday, Aug. 13. Starting time is 7 p.m.

Al Britt, assistant county athletic director, said the entire Jamboree is scheduled to last two hours and 45 minutes.

The Jamboree was the brainchild of former Clinton head football coach Bob Lewis, who came up with the idea in the 1990’s.

Britt said the format has changed several times over the years. “It’s now right back where it started,” said Britt referring to this year’s location. In recent years there have been as many as eight teams involved, which meant splitting the gates with other counties. “With the addition of Harrells,” explained Britt, “we felt there would be plenty of competition without going outside the county.”

Admission to the event will be $6. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m.

Sessions will last 10 minutes. There will be three teams on each end of the field at any given time and they will rotate. Each school will not necessarily meet each of the other schools. Coaches may run as many plays as possible during that time. There will be two minutes between sessions for teams to move to their next position. Halftime will be 15 minutes.

Lakewood and Midway will change ends for the second half. Other teams will remain where they began.

The Robert Hill Memorial Luncheon will be held at noon on the day of the Jamboree at Skipper’s Restaurant. Coaches and athletic directors will speak at the luncheon.
