Edna Ruth C. Shytle, 89

CHAPEL HILL — Mrs. Edna Ruth Crumpler Shytle, 89, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010. She was born on Sept. 17, l920 in Clinton, N.C. to Bessie and Everette Crumpler.

She was a resident of Carolina Meadows since l993. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Walter Shytle in l990.

Mrs. Shytle is survived by two sons, Wally Shytle of Hillsboro, Wayne Shytle of Chapel Hill; one daughter, Lynn Bream (Peter) of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Nora Mellott (Calvin) of Chapel Hill, Bessie Horne of Roseboro, and Joyce Wise (David); and several nieces and nephews.

She had been a member of Carrboro Baptist Church for many years, a homemaker, a seamstress, and remained a volunteer as long as she was physically able. She was a retired secretary of UNC-TV, a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, the Morning Mission Circle, and the Willing Workers Sunday School class. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star for many years, serving as Worthy Matron for five years. She was appointed Dist. Deputy Grand Matron (1977-78), North Carolina Grand Chapter Officer (1981-82), and Grand Representative to the State of Washington OES (1982-83). She was elected a Life Member and also received the Veterans Award for 50 years continuous service in the Order. She never stopped being active in benevolence.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 14, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Dennis Hill, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Jim Greenlee, pastor of Farrington Road Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be nephews, Cam Mellott, Curtis Mellott, Millard Owen, Rex Owen, Keith Owen, and Ted Owen.

The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., prior to the service. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery.

Oscar L. Harrell, 87

CLINTON — Mr. Oscar Leroy Harrell, 87, of 507 Parker Drive, died at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, Wednesday, August 11, 2010.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 14, at Royal-Hall Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Shook officiating. Burial will follow in the Clinton Cemetery.

Born in 1922 in Chowan County, Mr. Harrell was the son of the late Oscar Julian and Olivia McClenny Harrell. He was a member of Grove Park Baptist Church and a service representative with Ingersoll Rand and Dresser Clark. He was the widower of Beatrice A. Harrell. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp having served in World War II as an aircraft crew chief.

He is survived by his daughter, Anne H. Izard and husband, Ernest of Plano, Texas; two sons, Kenneth C. Harrell of Clinton and William J. Harrell and wife, Sara of Matthews, N.C.; two sisters, Millie Chevalier and husband, Jack of Richmond, Va. and Juanita Whitehurst of Sanston, Va.; a brother, Paul J. Harrell and wife, Betty of Winston Salem; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by a three sisters, Pencie Harrell, Jessie Horan and Sarah Trexler.

The family will receive friends Friday night from 6-8 p.m., at Royal-Hall Funeral Home and other times at his home.

WARSAW — Mr. Jerry Landrum West, 76, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010 at his residence.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday Aug. 14, at Warsaw United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Robert Hagerty. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Cemetery.

A native of Duplin County, Mr. West was the son of the late James Norwood and Anna Pollock West.

John H. Carter, 63

CLINTON — Mr. John Harold Carter, 63, of 1526 Ozzie Road, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 15, at Serenity Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Flowers officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Carter, born in Onslow County, was the son of the late John McCoy Carter and Ellen Louise Smith Carter. He was retired from the U.S. Army, a Vietnam veteran, a member of the 1st Air Cavalry Division and had been awarded three Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars. He was a member of Serenity Baptist Church and the Masons Hiram Lodge No. 98.

He was predeceased by a son, John Harold Carter II.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Brenda Kaye Matthews Carter of the home; a daughter, Renee Raynor and husband Randy of Clinton; a son, Johnny Carter and fiancee Danyelle Marek of Morehead City; five grandchildren, Keith Raynor, Austin Carter, Olivia Carter, Karlie Steiner, and Amber Herring; a great-grandchild, Cayden Herring; four sisters, Patricia Carter of Clinton, Nell Batchelor of Rose Hill, Judy Naylor of Clinton, and Gail Smith of Clinton; a brother, Frankie Carter of Clinton, special family members, Summer Steiner and Carl Steiner, and many special nieces and nephews..

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Aug. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his daughter, 2401 Ezzell Road, Clinton.

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Mr. Horace James Treadwell Jr., 63 of 116 Valhalla Drive, formerly of Garland, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2010 at St. Joseph Hospital, in Atlanta, Ga.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 14, Saint Stephen AME Zion Church, by the Reverend Hugh Miller. Burial will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Aug. 16, at the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, N.C., with full Military Honors.

Mr. Treadwell is survived by his wife, Dorothy Treadwell; son, Billy Johnson of Cumming, Ga.; two daughters, Angel Y. Moody of Clarksville, Tenn., Monica R. Jones of Roswell, Ga.; one step-son, Juillei Jonz of Seattle, Wash.; one brother, Tony Richardson, of Gastonia, N.C.; one sister, Vonda Richardson, of Wilmington, N.C.; mother, Jennie Lee Richardson of Elizabethtown, N.C.

Roy E. Kennedy, 74

WARSAW — Mr. Roy E. Kennedy, 74, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2010 at Quinn Hospice Center in Kenansville.

Mr. Kennedy was born Nov. 16, 1935 in Duplin County to the late Burl Kennedy and Bessie Miller Kennedy.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 14, at Community Funeral Home Chapel of Warsaw. Burial will follow in Devotional Gardens of Warsaw.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, Aug. 13, at Community Funeral Home of Warsaw.
