WARSAW — The nation’s longest consecutive Veterans Day Celebration has been recognized an official regional site for 2010. Warsaw’s annual Veterans Day Celebration has been cited by the Veterans Day National Committee and will serve as one of four regional sites in North Carolina. There were none in North Carolina last year.

The Veterans Day National Committee recognizes select Veterans Day Observances throughout the country that represent fitting tributes to America’s heroes. They support a number of Veterans Day Regional Sites. These sites conduct Veterans Day Celebrations that provide excellent examples and are model community events for other communities to follow. Secretary Eric Shinseki (Secretary of Veterans Affairs) said “Veterans Day is a national Thank You to the men and women who have served all of us in uniform. These regional observances enable the federal government to bring resources closer to more Veterans”

This year the Warsaw memorial service planned by the VFW Post 9810 members of the Veterans Committee have decided to honor all branches of the service with a marshal from each branch represented. The theme for the 2010 celebrations is “By Air, Land and Sea—We go forward together.”

The celebration kicks off with the parade beginning at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 6, and the planners are hoping for a fly over at 11 a.m. to start the parade and the Special Forces Flying Tigers jumping after fly over. The 208th Army Band from Concord Army Reserve (Chief Warrant Officer Timothy Lyden) will play after parade starting at 1:30 p.m. The Duplin County Veterans Museum will also be open. A static display in the park area will also be available for viewing. A carnival is being planned and will open Wednesday, Nov. 3 through Saturday, Nov. 6. A special church service has also been planned on Sunday, Oct. 31 prior to the annual event.

Town officials and the Veterans Celebration committee are expecting a large crowd again this year for their celebration and encourage families to come join the festivities as they pay tribute to veterans.
