The Princeton Lady Bulldogs came to Spiveys Corner Tuesday night determined to avenge their home loss to Midway a week ago. After falling behind early, coach Marty Gurganus’ Lady Bulldogs dominated in the second half and came away with a 53-39 victory.
The Lady Raiders posted a 12-7 lead after 1 quarter. Jennifer Blackmon dropped in half the baskets during the frame. In the second period, Midway’s advantage reached 10 points at 22-12, before Princeton went on a 5-0 run to end the half, boosted by several unforced Raider turnovers. The home team led 22-17 at intermission.
Princeton applied a half court press in the second half and bolted to a 36-34 lead by the end of the third quarter. In the final 8 minutes, Midway could only manage 5 points. With 6:30 to go, it was still a 4 point game at 38-34. At the 3:59 mark, the Lady Bulldogs’ lead had grown to 8 points at 44-36. The Lady Raiders’ inability to score combined with numerous turnovers contributed to the final 14 point deficit.
Jennifer Blackmon led the Raiders with 13 points. She snagged 14 rebounds and had 3 blocks. Jada Cannady added 11 points to go with 6 rebounds and 2 steals. “She played her best game of the 5 we’ve played,” stressed Midway head coach Jennifer Honeycutt. Sophomore Haley Beasley contributed 6 points and 8 boards. Morgan Tew had 5 points. Elizabeth McCullen and Hannah Hubbard scored 2 each.
Savannah Massengill led Princeton with 23 points, after being held to just 1 field in the first half.
“The first half was great,” remarked coach Honeycutt. “In the second half, they (Princeton) came out and they wanted the basketball. They were shooting uncontested shots. It was like we lost our focus after halftime and lost our intensity. We lacked the leadership and we lacked the communication on the court.”
The Lady Raiders fall to 1-4 and will host South Johnston tonight.
