Robert Carr believes in Sampson Community College and he, and his family, offered a special gift to the college to cement that belief.
On behalf of the Robert Carr Family, a $10,000 check was presented to The Sampson Community College Foundation to establish the Phillip Fosco Compensatory Education Program Fund.
The relationship between Carr Precast, Inc. in Sampson County and Sampson Community College first started on Sept. 28, 2010 through the SCC Customized Training Program. Carr Precast manufactures a variety of products for “Agriculture, Department of Transportation, and Home Products.
The company was started in 1976 by Robert Carr, a native of northern Sampson County. Kate L. Brown, director of Customized Training Program at Sampson Community College, has worked with Precast over the past few years in helping them develop assessments, training activities, and professional relationships.
As Carr is gradually moving toward retirement, Tracey Sprague, his son-in-law, is becoming more active in the company. In the spring of 2012, Carr shared with Brown that he wanted to make a donation to the Compensatory Education Program at the college to express his appreciation for the support given his company through Customized Training.
Carr stated in the meeting, “If it had not been for the Customized Training Program, we would not be sitting around the board room table having the discussion regarding the gift.”
Lisa Turlington, executive director of the SCC Foundation, said she appreciates the relationships that develop through this program, noting, “All of the money raised and the work that comes from the Foundation starts with partnerships between the college and community leaders. Katie is a great ambassador for the college’s Foundation in that she shares her passion with everyone she meets.”
On Carr’s first visit to the college, she gave him a tour, and he was especially impressed with the SCC Compensatory Program because of the special needs of his grandson, Phillip.
The Carr family chose to make a gift that would touch the lives of others that faced some of the same challenges. “It has been an honor to work with the Carr Precast group; they are a very committed company to enhance growth and development for Sampson County. The training has given their employees an opportunity to become nationally certified in specialized areas of manufacturing concrete; the training has created a competitive advantage for the company,” shared Brown.
The SCC Foundation is 501 (c)(3) organization and gifts may be sent to: SCC Foundation, PO Box 318, Clinton, NC 28329.
