A one-vehicle accident late Monday night has claimed the life of yet another Sampson County teenager, this one believed to be a student at the Early College.

According to N.C. Highway Patrol reports, Elizabeth Barefoot, 18, of 616 McLamb St., Roseboro, died as a result of the one-vehicle accident which happened around 11 p.m. Monday on Boykin Bridge Road.

Barefoot, reports show, was traveling west on Boykin Bridge Road, toward Fayetteville, when she crossed the center line and struck a ditch, causing the vehicle to overturn and hit a tree.

She and her passenger, Bethany Pilkington, 18, of 2098 Big Piney Grove Road, Clinton, were taken to Sampson Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Barefoot, Highway Patrol Trooper Bryan Smith said, was being transferred from Sampson Regional to another area hospital when she reportedly died from the injuries sustained in the accident.

Amber Cava marketing director for Sampson Regional Medical Center, said Pilkington was transferred from SRMC to UNC Hospitals in stable condition. An update on her condition from UNC was not immediately available. It was just over a month ago that Pilkington was involved in another accident. In that incident, she was the driver and a passenger, 16-year-old Lakewood High student Ronald Lucas, was killed.

Monday night’s accident is the 14th on Sampson County highways this year and the third involving a high school student in less than two months.

Last year, 14 people were killed on county roadways during all of 2011.

G-girl my heart goes out to you in dealing with this. I can't imagine what you are going through. All parents can do is teach kids what they think they need to know and hope they use it. I couldn't agree more about hoping someone learns from the mistakes of others unfortunately with teenagers it doesn't always work that way. May your strength in your faith get you through this painful time.

SISTrumpet, Bethany is not strong...but her plan that God has for her, is. She is broken due to the losses she has suffered. Beth is my daughter. She was an angel her on earth & now she is an angel in heaven. Was carelessness involved in both accidents? Yes. Was mistakes made by both Bethany in the first accident & my Lil Bear in the 2nd accident? Yes. They are both teenagers...doing the same thing we as teenagers did. All I can do is pray that others will take notice at the losses & the pain that is being felt & wil make better decisions...be more careful & cautious.

Leopard mom get your panties out of a wad. No one Is being cruel or cold hearted. The facts are the facts. Accidents don't happen, they are caused. this wasn't a case of a blown out tire or brakes that failed and caused a wreck. It' s very sad that two teenagers have died in wrecks in the last month. My heart goes out to those families. It's even more sad there's a common factor here. Survivor's guilt is tough to deal with even if you were completely blameless.I can't imagine how difficult it must be knowing had you done things differently that your friends would still be here. We will all be praying for the families of those killed and Bethany as well.

SIStrumpet I sure wish that I knew who you were so that I could tell you to your face that you are one cold hearted individual. Your comments to or about Bethany are very juvenile and cold hearted. Accidents happen and God does everything for a reason. I must tell you that you are not perfect and an accident could happen to you tomorrow. You must have never lost a close friend or family member and felt the pain and hurt. I think Bethany is suffering in more ways than you will ever know. I do owe you an apology though, I should not have only said you were cold hearted, you are a plain out idiot with no respect!

Both of the girls were classmates of mine. I didn't know Bethany that well. But Elizabeth, Beth, was a beautiful soul and its touched all the souls in SECHS. Even lower classes that didn't really know her. And to mention the earlier wreck is just distasteful. This had nothing to do with the other wreck so there was no reason to mention his name. If you wanted to throw out statistics about teen drivers and fatalities write another article without names. This is just, as proudleopardmom put it, adding "salt to unhealed wounds."

So it's not common knowledge that Bethany was the driver in a wreck about a month ago in which another teenager was killed? How is reporting the facts considered cold-hearted? Obviously Bethany is already strong Leopard mom as she has survived two wrecks that were fatal to her friends. She is incredibly lucky as well. I would think after her first experience she would be more cautious, for example, monitoring speed, texting, etc. of the car she's either driving or riding in. Both wrecks were careless and single car accidents which means the drivers weren't paying attention. So yes, stay strong Bethany because you have had two free passes....third time you might not be so lucky.

What a cruel last statement that was made by Sistrumpet. I hope those words never come back to haunt you. Coming from a person close to all of these families, you need to pray and offer support for you have obviously NO idea what heartache these kids are living with and I do.

Very sad, Beth was a wonderful kind person loved by so many. But what did Bethany and Ronald have to do with this story? Nothing! Just to add more salt to unhealed wounds! The news media can be so cold hearted! RIP Beth and Ronald. Stay strong Bethany.
