Coming off a solid win against James Kenan the night before, Union’s varsity boys took on non-conference rival North Duplin and came away with another road win, this won 56-50.

Although not playing with the same intensity as the night before, the Spartans were able to hold off the Rebels, despite a close game throughout.

“We were not very active and we were lucky to be in the game at the half,” said coach Tim Pope. “Fortunately we played a great fourth quarter, our best effort of the year, scoring 24 points, shotting 12 out of 16 from the free throw line down the stretch.”

And that, Pope said, made the difference in the ball game.

Union took the early first quarter lead at 10-8, but North Duplin stayed in it, and the game was only a 1-point Union spread at intermission.

The Rebels took the lead in the third quarter, 31-29, but then Union when on its scoring spree, hitting 24 in the final frame. North Duplin score 19.

The win moves Union to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

They faced Pender Thursday night, but scores were not called in before press time. See those results in Sunday’s Sampson Independent.
