The Midway Lady Raiders hosted Wallace-Rose Hill Thursday looking for a conference win and their second overall victory of the season. They defeated the Lady Bulldogs 60-47.
The Lady Raiders led 10-5 at the end of one quarter. They got off to a 10-2 start with balanced scoring.
Scoring picked up in the second period as the home team outdistanced the visitors 20-8 to post a 30-13 lead at intermission. Jennifer Blackmon led the way with 7 points in the quarter.
The second half was a foul fest. The Lady Raiders led 45-24 after three periods. In the final frame, as Midway began to lose personnel due to fouls, the Lady Bulldogs were able to cut into the lead. With 1:47 remaining, the score was 54-43, but that was as close as Wallace-Rose Hill would get.
Kaitlyn Jackson, Elizabeth McCullen, Morgan Tew, and Hannah Hubbard all fouled out for the home team. The Lady Raiders themselves went to the charity stripe 33 times.
Hubbard posted 14 points to lead Midway. Blackmon added 12, while Jada Cannady and Tew connected for 9 points each. Jackson scored 6. Brianna Butler, moved up from the junior varsity team, contributed 4 points. Elizabeth McCullen added 3 and Ivey Parker scored 2. Chakerria Rhodes, also up from the JV team, hit a free throw.
Blackmon also had 10 rebounds for a double double. Tew snagged 8 boards.
Amber Poole missed the game due to an injury versus North Johnston. Tess Williams and Hailey Beasley did not play due to the flu.
“We gave up a lot of points at the end of the game just to keep people on the floor,” explained Midway head coach Jennifer Honeycutt. “Hannah Hubbard had a big game tonight. Elizabeth McCullen missed Tuesday’s game due to the death of her grandmother and she came off the bench and played one of her best games. She had 5 assists and 7 steals.”
Honeycutt praised her team for the overall effort. “We played team ball tonight. We had more assists than we’ve ever had,” she added.
Midway goes to 2-8 overall and 1-1 in the Tri-County Conference. They will host North Johnston on Thursday, Dec. 27.
