ATKINSON — Annie Maude “Anne” Burns, 76, passed gently from her earthly life on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Black River Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Paul Layton. Her cremated remains will be laid to rest in Black River Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
She was born March 19, 1936 in Robeson County, the daughter of the late Curtius Compton Burns and Olga Corbett Burns. She was also preceded in death by her brother, William “Bill” C. Burns.
Anne is survived by her loving family; sisters, Nancy B. Ponivas and Marguerite Burns Culbreth (John), both of Atkinson; brothers, James T. “Jimmy” Burns (Judy) of Atkinson and John C. “Jack” Burns of Bay Tree Lakes; sister-in-law, Kathryn Burns of Ivanhoe; and many nieces and nephews.
Anne graduated and received her teaching degree from Women’s College, now UNC-Greensboro. She began her teaching career at Atkinson High School and retired from Clinton High School after teaching 34 years. She always believed teaching was her special mission in life, therefore it was not taken lightly. Anne challenged and encouraged her students to fulfill their potential.
Anne was a faithful member of Black River Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder and in many other capacities for the betterment of the church. She was a loyal and caring friend to many, spending many hours visiting folks that were unable to be out and about. Ann loved her family, but most important she loved and served her Lord. Her gentle smile, warm heart and caring nature will always be remembered. Anne leaves a legacy of faith, hope and love.
