The Midway Lady Raiders hosted James Kenan Friday night in a Tri-County Conference game. The visiting Lady Tigers jumped to an early lead and coasted to a 63-42 win.

Midway was outscored 22-6 in the opening quarter. James Kenan also held the home team to 6 points in the second period en route to posting a 39-12 score at intermission.

In the third quarter, following some halftime adjustments, the Lady Raiders outscored the visitors 14-9, but still trailed 48-26. In the final frame, Midway held a 16-15 advantage, but the damage had been done early.

Jada Cannady led Midway in scoring with 13 points. Morgan Tew connected on 8 points. Jennifer Blackmon added 5. Amber Poole and Haley Beasley added 4 each. Tess Williams and Hannah Hubbard scored 3 a piece, while Kaitlyn Jackson hit a pair of free throws.

“In the first quarter, I think we came out intimidated,” explained Midway head coach Jennifer Honeycutt. “Nobody wanted the basketball. It was like it was a hot potato. After the half we changed some things offensively. We outscored them in the third and fourth quarters. That shows we didn’t quit.” Honeycutt added that the Lady Raiders were 11 for 12 from the charity stripe in the second half. “Lakewood and James Kenan are among the best teams in the state,” attested the coach. The Lady Tigers were coming off a Tuesday night loss to Lakewood.

Desaree Phillips led the way for James Kenan with 23 points. Jasmine Huffin added 14.

Midway falls to 2-3 in conference play and 3-11 overall. The Lady Tigers are 4-1 in the conference. The Lady Raiders will be taking exams next week and then travel to Union on Thursday.
