Midway Middle’s young Raider girls took down cross-county rival Union Middle Thursday afternoon 40-16, but the score Midway coach Selena Joseph said, did not show just how scrappy both teams played.

“I saw a lot of good hustle from both teams and great sportsmanship from everyone.”

Midway just got the early lead, and with a strong defensive showing was able to hold onto it to get the win.

The young Raiders lead 13-2 after the first quarter, and went into the half with a sizable lead, 21-4.

In the third period, Union was able to match-up a little better, and trailed by only 1 point, in the quarter, 8-7, but the first half deficit was just too much for them to overcome.

“We played really good defense,” Joseph said. “We had a lot of steals which led to fast breaks and some good points for us.”

Leading the way for Midway was Alex Canady with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists. Also scoring were Leah Williams, 5 points, 5 steals and 3 assists; Sabrina Cowell, 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals; Hannah Lucas, 1 point, 7 steals; Blythe Smith, 7 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals; Tyler Kidler, 4 rebounds; Maggie Warren, 3 rebounds; Madeline Royal, 3 points, 4 rebounds; Logan Baggett, 4 points; and Rachel Hodges, 3 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.

For Union, T. Chestnutt had 13 points and S. Hope had 3 points.
