The Midway Raiders left their home court heartbroken Monday night following a 2 point loss to Heide Trask from Pender County. After leading for most of the evening, the Raiders lost 59-57.

The home team jumped out to a 19-12 lead after one quarter. Quincy Baggett connected on 6 points in the opening moments and Taylor Calcutt had another 5.

In the second period, the Raiders added to their lead and posted a 36-26 score at intermission. The Raiders’ balanced attack got points from eight different players in the quarter.

The Titans didn’t waste any time cutting into the lead in the second half. A 10-4 run made it 40-36 with 5:26 left in the third quarter. They inched closer and tied it at 45 as the frame came to a close.

To begin the fourth quarter, Raheem Thomas hit a free throw, and moments later, Justin Thompson hit 2 more to put the team up by 3 with 6:57 left to play. At the 5:45 mark, Thompson went back to the line and gave the Raiders a 5 point lead at 50-45.

Following a Titan basket, Thomas answered with a shot on his end of the court to make it 52-47. There was still 4:35 left in the game. Trask responded with back-to-back 3-point possessions, and suddenly they led for the first time in the game. It was 53-52 at the 3:30 mark.

The visitors added another field goal to go up by 3, but Calcutt nailed a huge shot with 2:51 left to make it 55-54. Thirty seconds later Thomas tied it with a free throw. The score remained tied while the Titans whittled time off the clock.

With 46 seconds remaining, the visitors were charged with an offensive foul. The Raiders couldn’t take advantage of it, however, and turned the ball over almost immediately. The Titans were fouled and delivered at the line to go up by 2.

The Raiders took possession with 31 seconds left, but failed to score. With 15 seconds remaining, the Titans were fouled and missed both free throws, but gained possession when the ball went out of bounds off the Raiders. Jordan Thompson came up with a huge steal and raced down court for the game-tying layup. It was 57-57.

With 1.6 left, the Titans were fouled and sealed the victory at the free throw line.

For the Raiders, Calcutt led the way with 13 points. Other leaders included Baggett – 10 points, Thomas - 9 points, and Justin Thompson – 8 points.

“Hats off to Trask, we just couldn’t finish tonight,” stated Midway head coach Leonard Henry, “As a coaching staff we take full responsibility for that. We have to make sure as a staff we put our team in the best position to win.”

The Raiders fall to 9-8 in all games, and 4-4 in Tri-County Conference play. After a Tuesday night trip to Wallace-Rose Hill, they will entertain Lakewood Friday.
