A strong first quarter, which saw Midway’s JV boys outdistance Lakewood 21-4, would prove a good foundation for a home win Friday night. Final score 76-60, Raiders.

Although Lakewood made it a game in the second quarter, bouncing back from a disappointing opening frame, the Leps couldn’t overtake the home team and headed into the break still trailing 37-28.

“We had a great first quarter, our best this year,” said Midway JV coach Matthew Creech. “In fact it was really the best game we’ve played all season.”

The JV Raiders, Creech said, came out with great intensity and executed a full court press that gave the visiting Leopards trouble.

“We were forcing turnovers and creating the offense we needed to get some quick points,” Creech said. “I was just a great game; I couldn’t have been prouder of this team for their effort.”

Paris Smith led scoring for the JV Raiders with 21 points. Also scoring were Shyheim Small, 12 points off the bench; Cameron Hobbson, 11; Jamarrious Baggett, 10; Tyler Mayes, 8; Ayden Canady, 5; Jackson Carr, 3; and Larry Blanks, 2.

Midway’s JV record moves to 13-6 overall and 5-5 in conference.

They play host to Pender next Tuesday, Feb. 5. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
