The Lakewood varsity girls continued their winning streak Monday, taking down South West Onslow by 24 points in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association tournament.

Despite the wide scoring margin, Lakewood head coach Lofton Kerr was not pleased with the way his team played. “I didn’t like this game at all,” he attested. “We didn’t play with any intensity. I thought we were flat all night,” he said, and added, “A good team with a little more desire than us will come in here and beat us.”

The game started off slow, with a lot of missed shots by the Lady Leopards. The ball would roll around the basket’s rim and then fall back out. The Lady Stallion’s defense was tough to get around, too, but Lakewood finally got a few shots to fall and by the end of the first quarter they were up 13-5.

The Leopards held on to that intensity in the second quarter and put 10 more points on the board while stopping SW Onslow cold.

With just a little more than two minutes left in the first half, the Stallions managed to put some points on the board and went into the locker room at intermission down by 14, with a score of 25-11.

The second half was much of the same. The Leopards put 19 points on the board, but held SW Onslow to 8 points in the third quarter. In the final frame, the Stallions dropped several threes, but it was too little too late and the Lady Leopards move on to to the second round which will be played at Lakewood Wednesday at 6 p.m. They will host the winner of the Rosewood/Princeton game.

“We managed to live to play another day, and I’m happy for that. We’ll just have to see how it goes Wednesday,” Coach Kerr stated.

Leading scorer for the Leopards was Tiesha Rich with 14 points. She also pulled down 10 rebounds. Others scoring for Lakewood were Rashyda Parker, 9 points; Brittney Boykin, points and 4 steals; Bianca Moore and Aja Stevens, 6 points each, with both of Aja’s from the 3-point line; Kiera Rich and Justina Henry , 3 a piece; Tasha Rich, 1; and Briana Evans, 2.

The Lakewood varsity boys traveled to East Columbus on Monday for the first round of the state playoffs. Those results were not called in Monday night or Tuesday.
