Two Garland-area men have found themselves in trouble with law enforcement, but not without first trying to avoid the trouble, with one of them leaving the scene of suspected criminal activity only to be caught a few minutes later.
Johnnie Kent Newkirk, 34, 580 Gibbs Road, Garland, and Marcus C. Thomas, 27, 541 Gibbs Road, Garland, were both charged Wednesday. Newkirk faces larceny and possession of stolen goods charges while Thomas is facing the more serious felonies of breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering and felony possession of stolen goods.
The two were taken into custody after officers were called to 8800 Hobbton Highway Wednesday by a landowner who had spotted two suspects on his property and believed they were up to no good.
According to sheriff’s Cpl. Marcus Smith, the property owner was riding down Hobbton Highway when he saw what he believed to be a suspicious vehicle parked on his property.
“The property owner pulled up to the vehicle and asked the two what they were doing. They told him they had gotten stuck,” Smith said.
The property owner didn’t buy the story and immediately called law enforcement.
One of the suspects, identified as Newkirk, walked away from the area toward Wilson Road, but officers responding to the call soon caught up with him and brought him back to the scene of the incident.
Through investigation, Smith said, it was determined that the pair were actually taking items, including assorted rebar metal, a ceiling fan, a bicycle and a lamp from the property when the owner spotted them.
Newkirk was placed under a $1,000 bond for his charges and given an April 11 court date.
Thomas was jailed under a $15,000 bond. His court date is set for April 15.
