It was a hard-fought, competitive game, but the Lady Leopards soccer team put another W in the win column against county rival Midway on Thursday with a 2-1 score.
Despite a fierce competition between the two teams, both coaches complimented the other team.
“I was pleased with my girls’ effort. It was a really good game, hard fought from the beginning. Lakewood is really well-coached and the teams has always been very competitive,” said Midway head coach Trey Apperson. “I thought the real difference-maker in the game is the keeper - Ryan (Wuester). She had an outstanding game,” he added.
On the other end of the field, Lakewood’s head coach, Jennifer Wuester, stressed how well-organized the Midway team was compared to the Leopards. “Midway is a well-coached team and played very organized, clean soccer. They had quite a few solid shots on goal. They did a very good job of divide and conquer and (goalie) Ryan made some really beautiful saves.”
“Lakewood played a very disorganized game, but we‘re breaking in some new players and trying some new things because next year we will lose 10 seniors,” Coach Wuester continued.
One of those seniors is Janay Kinlock, who assisted Ashton Odum in scoring 1 of Ashton’s 2 goals. Coach Wuester said Kinlock is her “distribution player” this year, funneling the ball to others for the score. Last year, Kinlock scored 74 percent of the team’s goals.
Midway’s goal was scored by Jakeish Williams.
The Raiders, who fall to 1-1 in the conference and 2-4 overall, will travel to Pender on Tuesday,
The Leopards move to 3-0 in the conference and travel to James Kenan on Tuesday.
