The visiting Lady Raiders softball team jumped out to a quick start, shutting out Lakewood, 6-0, on Thursday.

Midway scored 5 runs by the third inning and their final run in the 6th, while effectively shutting down the Lady Leopard’s bats.

“We’ve been working on making smart defensive plays and finishing the game and tonight we were able to finish the game. We had a lot of freshman mistakes our first four games. We’re very young, with just 4 seniors, no juniors, and the rest are freshman and sophomores,” Midway head coach Leigh Smith stressed.

For Midway, Taylor Faircloth scored 1 run; Elizabeth McCullen went 3-4 and scored 1 run; Jada Cannady was 4-4 with 1 run; Kelsey Pondo went 2-4 and scored 1 run; Amber Poole was 3-4 with 1 run; Britney Watson went 4-4 and scored 1 run.. Midway is now 2-1 in the conference.

A frustrated and subdued Dave Yarasheski put a lot of the blame for the Lakewood loss on defensive errors.

“We did not do a good job defensively or offensively tonight. We had five errors defensively, which hurt us. I think 4 of their 6 runs were unearned. Our defense is really hurting us. After the first two innings we seemed to settle down,” he explained.

Stats for Lakewood show that Miranda Lane was 1-4, Bailey Dudley, 2-3; Alyssa Horne, 2-3; Emily Lewis, 1-3; and Anna Heinz, 1-3.

The Lady Leopards are now 0-3 in conference.

On Tuesday, Lakewood travels to Duplin County rival James Kenan as the Lady Raiders go to Pender.
