Saving lives is simply another day at the office for two graduates of Sampson Community College’s Advanced EMT to Paramedic Bridge Program. The program is a part of SCC’s Workforce and Development department.
Devin McLamb and Justin Beasley graduated the program and have now gone on to pass the North Carolina paramedic exam. Passing the state exam means they are paramedics certified by the State of North Carolina Office of EMS and they may officially work as paramedics in North Carolina.
“We are proud of these students,” says Jim DeMay, Paramedic instructor at the college. “This is not an easy examination by any means. The situations that these students will be placed in going forward won’t be easy either. It is good to know that after all the hard work here and then having to pass the exam, they will be ready when they are needed to protect our citizens.”
The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) serves as the nation’s EMS certification organization. The mission of the NREMT techs has always been centered on protecting the public and advancing the EMS profession. Exams cover the entire spectrum of EMS care including: Airway, Respiration and Ventilation; Cardiology & Resuscitation; Trauma; Medical; Obstetrics/Gynecology and EMS Operations. Paramedics are also tested on six skills: Patient Assessment: Trauma, Dynamic Cardiology, Static Cardiology, Oral Station Case A, Oral Station Case B, and an Integrated Out-Of-Hospital Scenario.
Angela Magill, Department Chair and EMS Coordinator at SCC, is excited. “This college has a longstanding reputation for its offerings in nursing and medical-related disciplines and this is just another example,” she says. “These students are ready for written, practice or real-life tests once they leave this college.” Just last week, SCC’s Medical Assisting program became nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
