Piano students present annual recital

The sounds of music — baroque, romantic, contemporary, and familiar hymns — filled Mary Goodwin’s piano studio last Thursday night as her eight students performed for the annual student recital event. Along with solo performances, several piano duets were featured, and the audience of parents, grandparents, and special guests responded with delight and enthusiasm.

Goodwin announced the imminent transfer of her Bosendorfer grand piano, upon which her students have performed for many years, to “a special place where many more people will enjoy it. ” She then presented the key to the piano to Dr. Michael Accurso, director of music at the Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh. Dr. Accurso’s wife, Brenda Accurso, had performed Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” earlier in the evening, and the program concluded with a duet arrangement of Bach’s “Sleepers, Wake”, performed by Dr. Accurso and Goodwin.

Prior to the recital, students received pins from the National Piano Playing Guild, as well as report cards and certificates for their guild auditions.

Students with one year memberships in the National Fraternity of Student Musicians are Logan Howerton, Phoebe Howerton, Danny Johnson, Karol Kusmierczuk, Kaya Kusmierczuk, Elinor Morkos, Allison Naylor and Lauren Naylor.

Students were also presented certificates from the North Carolina Music Association, and trophies were awarded to Logan Howerton, Phoebe Howerton, Karol Kusmierczuk and Lauren Naylor.
