Pickle company’s Employees Community Fund awards scholarships

MOUNT OLIVE — Mt. Olive Pickle Company’s Employees Community Fund has awarded four $1,500 scholarships to children or grandchildren of employees.

Recipients are Aeris Carter, Cindy Tamayo-Hernandez, Kia Kornegay and Veronica Ortiz.

Carter is the daughter of Mt. Olive Pickle employee Amanda Carter and Chris Carter. A senior at Wayne Early/Middle College High School, she will enter the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall as a history major.

Tamayo is the granddaughter of Mt. Olive Pickle employee Jesus Navarro and the daughter of Lidio and Nancy Tamayo. She graduated from Southern Wayne High School in June 2016 and earned her cosmetology certification shortly after. She is transferring from Wayne Community College to Campbell University this fall, where she will seek a kinesiology major with the goal of becoming a physical therapist.

Kornegay is the daughter of Mt. Olive Pickle employee Tia Kornegay and Devon Hamilton. She is a Southern Wayne High School senior and will enter East Carolina University this fall to major in biology.

Ortiz is the daughter of Mt. Olive Pickle employee Leticia Gracia. She is a senior at Spring Creek High School and will enter the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study biomedical engineering.

A reception for the four recipients and their families was held May 14 at Mt. Olive Pickle.

The scholarships, created by the Employees Community Fund in 2006, are open to employees who are regular, active employees at Mt. Olive for five or more years and also members of the Employees Community Fund for the past three years. The scholarships are open to eligible employees’ children, step-children, or grandchildren who are either high school seniors or full-time college students with at least 12 hours.

Established in 1959, the Employees Community Fund is supported by Mt. Olive employees, who donate 30 cents of every $100 of their gross wages to the fund. The company then matches employee contributions. This year, the Employees Community Fund contributed $119,105 to 50 area nonprofit community organizations, in addition to the scholarships.

In business since 1926, Mt. Olive packs and sells the best-selling brand of pickles, peppers and relishes in the country.
