The Just-A-Mere Garden Club met for its end-of-year dinner meeting June 5 to culminate another club year. Roberts Grove Church Fellowship Hall was the site for the dinner meeting and Dixie Honeycutt was the hostess.
Tables in the fellowship hall were covered in white with vases of blue hydrangeas placed there.
President Catherine Gilmore opened the meeting with the reading of the club collect. There were 11 members in attendance.
A moment of silence remembered the late Dorothy Tart Warren and prayer followed by Gilmore. Warren was a beloved friend and a long-time member of the Just-A-Mere Garden Club.
For the night’s devotion, Martha Turner read the children’s book “Pete the Cat.” She encouraged all to keep walking and singing your song as “Pete” did in the story. Selections of scripture were read and then she closed with prayer.
The president then gave the blessing for the buffet dinner. The latter half of the membership list furnished the food for the dinner.
A delicious dinner featured stew beef and rice, butter beans, corn, fresh cabbage, rutabagas, broccoli salad, deviled eggs, spiced apple rings and pickles, rolls, and iced tea. Chocolate layer cake and vanilla ice cream were enjoyed for dessert.
In the business session that followed, suggestions were requested for next year’s club work. Highlights were mentioned concerning the recently-held brunch and the Memorial Day observance. Plans to attend the president’s meeting and the fall board meeting were discussed.
Wilma Jean Wise presented her committee’s findings on the club constitution for any updates or changes.
It was announced that Trey Pope, a recent Midway High School graduate, was the recipient of the club’s $100 scholarship.
Karene Smith read the annual Historian’s Report, which recapped the year’s work.
Dixie Honeycutt was distinguished as the Club Woman of the Year. She was presented a framed certificate and the traveling silver tray for this honor.
A bougainvillea was won by Karene Smith in the hostess gift drawing. Also, Wilma Jean Wise remembered each member with either a pepper plant or a Jerusalem cherry plant to take home.
