Sampson Animal Shelter waives adoption fees

Oct. 13-15, the Sampson County Animal Shelter will be hosting free animal adoption days to give furry friends a new home.

The shelter will open its doors to the public to let those seeking a new addition to their families come pick a pet up completely free of charge. In past years, the shelter has done this event on an annual basis, only one day per year. Now the shelter wants to extend the event over a three-day stretch, giving future pets a better chance at finding a home.

“We wanted to give all our animals a chance to find their forever home,” said Shelter Director Anna Ellis. “We’re hoping every adoptable animal finds their perfect fit. We have so many amazing animals in our care that deserve to find their family. Typically, we only do it one day a year; so, with multiple days we are hoping more animals get adopted.”

The event was originally planned as part of the Clinton Square Fair this weekend, but with recent forecasts showing a great chance of rain, the event was moved into the shelter itself. Fortunately enough, this means that cats will be adoptable for free as well. Cats and some dogs were originally not a part of the event as it was deemed too risky for them, Ellis said. With the change in location, these animals are now adoptable.

“A valid ID and being at least 18 years old are the only requirements needed to adopt,” said Ellis. “Every animal adopted will be up to date on vaccines and be spayed or neutered. If the animal isn’t altered at the time of adoption, it will be before it can leave. Our veterinarian will be completing surgeries Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday on animals who have been adopted.”

While the fees are free, Ellis and the shelter want potential adopters to know that the price of taking care of that animal is very high.

“Despite the fees being free, we want to make sure everyone is able to provide the level of care the animals deserve,” said Ellis. “Remember, this is a lifelong commitment, with vet visits, food, proper housing, etc.”

There are also three animals in the shelter that require a little extra love.

“There are three animals in our care that have specific needs,” said Ellis “We have a bonded pair that must be adopted together. We also have a deaf dog who will need to be kept strictly inside.”

The event will be held at the shelter at 168 Agriculture Place in Clinton Monday and Wednesday from 1-5 p.m. and Tuesday from 1-7 p.m. For more information, contact Ellis at [email protected].
