A fast-moving grass fire threatened several structures Sunday afternoon on Underwood Street in Clinton before firefighters were able to contain the blaze.
NC Forestry Service aided Clinton Fire Department to help contain the fire, which was reported in the 800 block of Underwood Street at approximately 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
“Engine 21 was the first unit to arrive and encountered a rapidly moving fire with multiple homes and outbuildings at risk,” stated Clinton Fire Chief Hagan Thornton. “Several residents were already attempting to slow the fire’s progress using garden hoses.”
Fire crews quickly deployed handlines from Engine 21 and Brush 21, he added, successfully stopping the fire’s advance and preventing damage to any structures.
The fire did extend to a nearby wooded area, but Clinton Fire Department personnel were able to contain it and halt its spread, Thornton said.
“I would like to personally thank the Bellfield community for their quick action and cooperation,” Thornton said. “Their efforts truly made a difference in the outcome of this incident.”
Clinton Fire personnel returned to the scene at approximately 9:30 p.m. to ensure the fire had not spread and to extinguish any hot spots.
The incident remains under investigation as of Monday morning. No injuries or structural damage were reported.
